Marseille Photo Journal

How big, how blue, how beautiful! Marseille you were everything I longed for! To shake off the shadows and dust of a long Parisian winter and soak up those beautiful blue Mediterranean seas, taste sea-food fresh from the sea and to drown in those soft pastel sunsets!

An early start to catch the TGV train from Paris to Marseille but totally worth it to step off the train by midday! Summer had already arrived in Marseille! I immediately fell in love with the city’s edgy vibe, the old architecture and old buildings. I love the Mediterranean feel – the traffic is craaazy! After a few bumps on the road, we were finally driving along the coast, windows open to feel that soft sea-breeze! “Oh look at those blue waters!” “Oh look at those blue skies!”

Turning off La Corniche and driving down a tiny winding road towards the sea-front, we finally arrive at Le Petit Nice Hotel! By midday, we’re having a café en terrace taking a moment to soak up that salty sea air. Shortly after we walk along La Corniche to the sea-front for a sea-food lunch at Peron by the old port. The hotel is perfectly located to spend some time on the rocks and to take sunset walks along La Corniche and taste the famous La Bouillabaisse dish chez FonFon!

The next day it’s an early start to drive to Cassis to start location-scouting and to meet with the Ysé team. Checking out the early morning light in Marseille below…

The coastal drive from Marseille is subliiiime…winding roads and incredible views…

Arriving at the beautiful sea-side village of Cassis. We take a trip on a boat to check out the landscape of Les Calanques and to research locations for the following day’s shoot! I fall in love with the cobalt blue waters of Plage du Bestouan…I’m hoping the Ysé girls will too!

Just beyond the creek, lies the breathtaking beach of ‘Calanques D’en Vau! It can only be reached by boat or foot. True wilderness less than thirty minutes from Cassis.

Views of Cassis harbour from the boat…it reminds me of Saint Tropez without the bling!

The following day, another early start to head over to Cassis for the shooting day! Arriving early to meet with the Ysé team at Plage du Bestouan….I’m a little apprehensive – it’s 8:30am and still no sunshine….

A quick pause to re-work make-up and shoot the final set before heading into Cassis village for lunch and then hitting the road again for our final location of the day….destination Les Figuerolles!

Les Figuerolles is about a 40min drive from Cassis and not the easiest location to find. We are so lucky with this beautiful weather but I’m a little worried about the stark afternoon light and busyness of the beach! As we got out of the car and made our way down the dusty trails, all my worries dissolve as we turn the corner and we are suddenly greeted by this stunning view!

I love the high-summer feeling of Figuerolles beach with the little café and bar at the top to soak up the views…Mathilde attentively changing Leonor’s look for this final afternoon shoot in the sun!

We’re so enthralled with the beauty of this place, we don’t want to leave. I catch as many moments as we can before we have to depart. What an adventure!  I truly loved working with the Ysé team on this exciting campaign. I only wish I had an extra few days to discover Marseille (I long to return soon). I can’t wait to share with you some of the final images from this shoot here soon…

  1. Gorgeous! Am going to the Yse site right now to pick out my Ete16 maillot. So many lovely memories of that coastline.
