Globalisation has infused its way into our skin care regimes and beauty bags with a whole new set of rules, products and rituals. The Korean and Japanese beauty wave has brought serums, sheet masks, bb creams and ten-step-cleansing rituels in a new found beauty frenzy. It’s beauty-ful and enriching and I love learning about beauty traditions from different cultures. I recently wrote about the Japanese inspired Okara by Nubio and have been treating myself to Japanese shiatsu facials in this great no fuss spot in the 7th.
With this in mind, I’m so happy to have recently discovered the new beauty brand Cha Ling (by LVMH) derived from the precious Pu’er tea from the Yunnan Province in China. More than just another new cosmetic brand, Cha Ling has a compelling story behind its origins.
A German biologist and his Chinese wife (both passionate about protecting a region known as the ‘green lung’ of China) had a chance meeting with Laurent Boillot, Chief Executive Officer of Guerlian and the terra incognita of China’s Yunnan province. They shared a combined passion to preserve the eco-system that produces Pu’er tea and imagined a new cosmetic house where luxury, esthetics and sustainable development grow together.
I was recently invited by the team at Cha Ling to attend a Pu’er tea ceremony and experience the products. I learned that like a really good wine, Pu’er tea improves with time, harvested from tea plant forests that are thousands of years old. It’s one of the most sought after teas in the world known for its antioxidant and anti-ageing properties. These properties are at the heart of the Cha Ling skin care products.
I also had my name written in Chinese calligraphy which was a really nice touch. The team went a step further to send me the most beautiful box with a selection of products to try at home. Inside: a candle, a sample of the rare Pu’er tea, a ceramic tea cup, cleansing powder + brush, a soap and a plumping serum. The set also included steam tablets, a beautiful papyrus impression of the Yunnan forest and a wrist bracelet (from the preservation) too. It feels like I have a little of the Yunnan forest spirit with me now!
I’m always a little bit apprehensive to try new products especially on my face as I have quite sensitive skin, but I found Cha Ling different. I love the purifying effects on my skin, I also really love the smell of the products and how natural they feel when I apply them on my skin. The exfoliant brush and and cleansing powder whip up into a beautiful cleansing foam-dream. I’ve been adding the serum to my moisturiser in the morning (channeling the Korean beauty rituals) and it gives a gorgeous glowy feel to my skin.
When it comes to beauty, I like to keep things simple, pure and as natural as possible. But what I really love about having experienced these products is that it has inspired my own new beauty rituel: I make some tea, I light my candle, I do a facial steam with the tablets (which infuses this beautiful aroma around the apartment) and I create my own little spa at home. A pure moment.
