A Taste of Dolce Vita with Eleonora Galasso

Eleonora Galasso, the belle Italian girl with a taste after my own heart; a passion for Paris, Italian food, markets and home cooked cuisine. With her distinctive style, and unassuming Italian allure, Eleonora is a true inspiration; she is a producer, an acclaimed Italian journalist, a brand ambassador, a food interpreter and now the founder of ‘La Dolce Tavola‘ – a Monday night Italian supper club set in a secret location in Paris. Last week, I combined two of my passions; exploring Parisian food markets and cooking up fresh Italian food with a wonderful expert on Italian cuisine. Here is a little taster of one marvellous Parisian morning…

I met Eleonora at the Bastille metro and we walked a short distance to Bastille market. The market was in full swing, we had a lot of fun with the vendors (who clearly thought Eleonora was an Italian movie star) and I got to experience, first hand, the market with a real food expert. Things like the 10km rule, looking for local produce and searching for the right stalls, are golden rules in navigating a French market. ‘Look out for the older ladies! They know a thing or two about the best stalls’, she points out as we walk along.

Planning the menu as we go, Eleonora, seeks out the best ingredients for a yellow pepper and mozzarella salad, an artichoke saffron risotto, and a mango and pomegranate dessert. I am intrigued and wondering how she is going to make all this happen in less than one hour!

As peppers are being chopped, stock is being made from scratch, mango being sliced and tastes of mozzarella being passed, Eleonora shares stories from her childhood. How she used to sneak into her great Grandmother’s kitchen to watch her cook. Her family kitchen has always been her inspiration, and her signature dishes, are based on traditional recipes from Sicily. Surrounded by all these amazing Italian aromas, hearing all these great stories, for a moment, I could easily be in a rustic Tuscan farmhouse…

But we were here in Paris, in this small but wonderful Parisian kitchen with all the tastes and makings of Italy around us. Thirty minutes later, we sat to enjoy creamy buffalo mozzarella salad with caramelised yellow peppers, saffron risotto with artichokes, followed by a light and sweet mango and pomegranate salad. It was pure food happiness!
